MEET THE STAFF
Owner and Trainer
I am a UC Berkeley grad (note my logo colors!) and also received my MBA before starting a corporate career that spanned 20 years in several industries. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, I wanted to redefine my life by spending more time with my family, which included adopting our puppy, Prince. That decision led me on a journey to purchasing a dog training franchise which I ran for six years.
Working with dogs and building relationships with their people has been the most fulfilling job I have ever had. With California Canine, I have changed how we teach basic obedience and agility by focusing on the relationship between you and your dog and teaching you how to incorporate your dog into your life and our community.
When I am not at work, I spend time with my husband, two daughters, and my dog, Prince.
I first got interested in agility over 11 years ago. I took my first agility class with Eloise and I was hooked from the start. Today my pack has grown from my original one to four, the newest additions being Lakota, a gentle giant, and Kanook, a social butterfly, both Malamutes. I found out how much of a team you and your dog can become. I love working agility with both my own dogs and I enjoy training puppy and adult “fun” agility.
My teaching philosophy is based on developing a strong foundational working relationship. I received my certification as a dog trainer from Animal Behavior College. As a student of Susan Garrett H360 and Agility Nation, Susan has taught me how to create trust between each handler and dog. I enjoy bringing out the pure joy in a dog and watching their confidence soar with new and innovative classes.
I can’t imagine doing anything else in life…I found my calling.
I have come to join California Canine all the way from Virginia! I earned my B.S. in Biology from UMW and have spent four years at Pup N' Iron, a similar dog training facility on the East Coast. I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), certified Trick Dog Instructor (CTDI), a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator through the AKC, and a Certified Canine Fitness Trainer (CCFT). I have taught classes that range from Puppy Training to Doggy Parkour and everything in between!
I have three dogs of my own, a Jack Russell Terrier named Bandit, a Husky Mix named Skibo, and a German Shepherd Dog named Zelda. When I am not training with clients, my GSD Zelda trials in both competition obedience and rally. We trial in AKC, CWAGS, and WCRL venues. If you're interested in learning more about these types of activities, don't hesitate to ask!
I have been working with the trainers and staff at California Canine for a few years. I fell in love with Dog Training while raising my current dog, Luna, and have transitioned to be part of the team in 2018! Although I grew up in Stockton, the Peninsula is where my heart is, and I am so happy to be a part of this community.
My dog Luna is a 3 year old Black Lab. She went through all levels of Obedience classes at California Canine and became a Therapy Dog, certified through Therapy Dog International. Most recently she has been working on her agility skills and is well on her way to graduating level 3.
My hope is that we can help all owners build the type of relationship Luna and I have. I look forward to meeting each and everyone of you. My family is expecting a new addition in January 2019, baby boy Mateo.
I come to California Canine from the rocky mountains of Colorado where I grew up surrounded by animals and with a deep love for dogs. I earned a BA in Fine Arts and worked as an office manager and accounting clerk before going all in on my dream of living as an artist in Monterey, a place that my dad grew up and that I have loved all my life.
My Samoyed girl, Kara Sea, is who brought me to California Canine; first for obedience and then for agility classes which are her absolute favorite. She has opened up the world to me and has so much love to give everyone she meets that she’s the one who guided us on the path to becoming a Therapy Dog team through California Canine and Therapy Dog International.
Dogs have a special place in my heart, but I truly love all animals. I grew up with at least two dogs running around and have had the pleasure to get to know and love a variety of breeds including Tibetian spaniels, Keeshonds, Samoyed and the ever present border collie. Currently I live with my Kara Sea, a border collie named Starbuck, an 18 year old Tibetian spaniel named Kata, a cat named Halo and a scarlet macaw named Sundance. My mom used to raise yellow nape amazons and African greys, and I used to do equestrian hunter/jumping, which is a lot like dog agility! Except now I’m running alongside my dog instead of riding the horse’s back!
Outside of California Canine I design jewelry, paint, have an online comic, as well as a myriad of other artistic ventures. It’s such a joy to come in and meet all the fantastic people and puppies, and I can’t wait to see you when you stop by!
We started training our golden retriever with Ratna when she was 9 weeks old…Ratna not only trains the dogs, but helps train us, the owners! Would highly recommend!!!
Nala says four paws up!
Spending time at California Canine is one of Trapper’s favorite things to do. He loves hanging with the staff, running agility, coming for parties, and playtimes. The atmosphere is friendly and the trainers and staff are welcoming to all.
Katie is so patient with our difficult dog and we learn more every week. She knows how to encourage us and push us to reach our goals. We couldn’t have asked for a better trainer!
Ratna is an excellent trainer and Mojo is in love with her. We’ve been training with her for four years now and we look forward to seeing her every single week.
