Ratna Anagol
Owner and Trainer

I am a certified trainer, CPDT-KA, a Professional Member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, and a member of Pet Professional Guild which is a force-free training association.

I am a UC Berkeley grad (note my logo colors!) and also received my MBA before starting a corporate career that spanned 20 years in several industries. After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, I wanted to redefine my life by spending more time with my family, which included adopting our puppy, Prince. That decision led me on a journey to purchasing a dog training franchise which I ran for six years.

Working with dogs and building relationships with their people has been the most fulfilling job I have ever had. With California Canine, I have changed how we teach basic obedience and agility by focusing on the relationship between you and your dog and teaching you how to incorporate your dog into your life and our community.

When I am not at work, I spend time with my husband, two daughters, and my dog, Prince.

I grew up in a rural community west of Seattle, where I was surrounded by various animals, including rabbits, horses, cows, pigs, and we always had at least one dog—sometimes as many as four! Throughout my school days, my sole sport was jumping horses, traveling to shows all over Washington State.

About 5 years ago, I moved to the Central Coast. Before coming to California Canine, I began working for a Labrador Retriever breeder/board and train kennel, where I trained family/companion dogs in basic obedience and good manners and prepared pups to go on to service dog training.

I am a certified professional dog trainer, CPDT-KA, an AKC Canine Good Citizen evaluator, and a Professional Member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers.

The affection humans and dogs share is incredibly unique. One of my greatest joys is facilitating communication between us and our beloved pets which, in turn, builds confidence in dog and human alike.

Outside of work, you can find me hiking or playing with my 4 year old chocolate lab Pebbles.

Originally from Massachusetts, my love for animals migrated to California with me. I have always been passionate about my animal friends, be they canine, equine, feline or other!

I only had a few pets growing up but often I would pet sit for friends and family in my youth. Once I turned 18, I went to the San Martin Animal shelter to start volunteering with cats and dogs looking for their forever homes. Since then, I have had numerous opportunities to to experience and learn about animal functions and behaviors. I have handled Search and Rescue dogs, sled dogs, service dogs and even the occasional police K9. I also volunteered at Farm Sanctuary in Acton, CA where I was exposed to cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats and multiple kinds of fowl that were rescued from factory farms.

Once I moved out, I adopted my boy, Kobe Wan Cannoli, a floppy-eared, red Doberman Pinscher whom I trained for public access and service work for PTSD. He has helped me to get out in the world when I was struggling to go out on my own. I also have a black cat named Cinder who makes me laugh every day. She has been hanging out with my current fresh water aquarium crew, a red betta fish named Frodo, and a common plecostomus named Samwise.

When I am away from California Canine, I continue to pet sit in the Monterey area, primarily for dogs, but the more species and individuals the better! I am also working on an online course on dog training through CATCH Academy to expand my knowledge in regards to force free dog handling and animal training in general.

I come to California Canine from Colorado where I grew up surrounded by animals and with a deep love for dogs.  I earned a BA in Fine Arts and worked as an office manager and accounting clerk before going all in on my dream of living as an artist in Monterey, a place that my dad grew up and that I have loved all my life.  Throughout my life I have had the pleasure to get to know and love a variety of breeds including Tibetian Spaniels, Keeshonds, and Border Collies.

My Samoyed girl, Kara Sea, is who brought me to California Canine; first for obedience and then for agility classes which are her absolute favorite.  She has also gone on to become a therapy dog with Therapy Dog International.  I also live with a 13 year old Border Collie named Starbuck, a scarlet macaw named Sundance, a cat named Halo, and have just added a new member to the family: an American Eskimo puppy named Cloud Dancer.  My life has always been filled with animals; from my mom raising parrots when I was a kid, to equestrian hunter/jumping in high school: which is a lot like dog agility, except now I’m running alongside my dog instead of riding a horse.

Outside of California Canine I design jewelry, paint, have an online comic, as well as a myriad of other artistic ventures.  It’s such a joy to come in and meet all the fantastic people and puppies, and I can’t wait to see you when you stop by!

Spending time at California Canine is one of Trapper’s favorite things to do.  He loves hanging with the staff, running agility, coming for parties, and playtimes.  The atmosphere is friendly and the trainers and staff are welcoming to all.

Katie is so patient with our difficult dog and we learn more every week.  She knows how to encourage us and push us to reach our goals.  We couldn’t have asked for a better trainer!

Ratna is an excellent trainer and Mojo is in love with her.  We’ve been training with her for four years now and we look forward to seeing her every single week.
